Virtual Beret Submissions from around the world!
All of these are submissions of "virtual artists" that people have submitted since March of 1994. Some people participated
through the Internet, some participated in workshops and
some have participated in live video "jams" at participating cable access
stations. Sometimes the Beret project just shows up at a good party, -we
get some great submissions that way.. and a beer or two doesn't hurt any
:-)
Original Berets
These were submitted from 1994-1996, via Usenet, a collection of thousands of interest groups. i went from group to group, asking for submissions.
Most of these are text and creative writing.
The Virtual Beret@Mobius
These are also selections from various ArtRages benefit parties at Mobius, an alternative space that used to be in Boston.
Virtual Beret Video Table
People made berets using a chromakey table created by Matt McMakin. smiley and McMakin went to these festivals and community centers. It
was quite an elaborate setup, but it basically allowed people to select
objects, and arrange them in a beret around their heads using a process called "chromakey". Here are submissions from Cambridge River Festival, and also at Somerville ArtBeat.
I coordinated an Exchange of Berets between kids in Glasgow, Scotland and the Internet Club at the Somerville Arts Council - I usually do the Virtual Beret Project with adults, but it turned out to be a good way to exchange ideas about art and artists between these teens.
Other Submissions
The Beret project has been all over..from cable access to community arts
centers, to arts openings. I did an artist residency and collected submissions from a cable access station, LTC in Lowell, Massachusetts. I also collected submissions during Jamaica Plain Open Studios .
